Sitting on a corner plot at the junction of two major roads, this mixed-use office building forms a hard edge to a pedestrian plaza behind it, created by the void between four new buildings.
Conceived as a healthy and sustainable building, it reacts to changes in its climate to maximize passive energy strategies. The double-skin kinetic facade is designed to maximize the sun’s rays with the facade panels adapting with the movement of the sun. As the angle of the sun rays change, the panels change accordingly. A large void penetrates through the center of the building, allowing natural ventilation to circulate to all floors while also permitting natural light to reach deep into the building.
At night, the façade panels become illuminated, utilizing solar energy stored during the day to be reflected out at night. The changing colors of the façade lighting can be considered as being similar to a chameleon’s changing skin color, thus giving the building its name and linking to the concept of bio-mimicry that drove the design process for the building.
